MALAYSIA, Georgetown, PENANG Saturday March 7th, 2015

A Day in Penang

Begin your adventure with a visit to the Baba Nyonya Mansion Museum. Also known as the Chung Keng Kooi Mansion, the museum houses richly ornate artifacts relating to the history and colorful lifestyle of the Straits Chinese, or Baba Nyonya, people of Penang. There are elaborate traditional clothes and accessories on display, delicate porcelain pieces as well as furniture and works of art brought from China and Europe. Next, journey to the Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Chinese Temple in South East Asia, whose hilltop location boasts a commanding view of Georgetown. The colorful Thai Buddhist temple houses the fourth-largest Reclining Buddha in the world, measuring 108 feet long. The Burmese Buddhist temple, sitting across the street, adds even more flavor to the already-rich cultural diversity of Penang. Following your temple visits, lunch is served at a leading restaurant before you head to Batu Ferringhi at the northern tip of Penang. From here it's a scenic drive through the tropical countryside, passing paddy fields and Malay villages as you traverse several hills. Occasional stretches offer a panoramic view of the west coast. Pause at a local fruit and spice stall to gain an appreciation of the many fruits and spices grown on this island. After your tropical countryside escapade, you'll drive along the coast for a view of the Penang Bridge. A photo stop allows you to capture a great shot of the world's fifth-longest bridge.
