CAPTAIN JONATHAN MERCER

CAPTAIN JONATHAN MERCER

Meet Captain Jonathan Mercer, Eurodam’s new master. While Captain Mercer is new to Eurodam, he’s not new to Holland America Line. He joined the company in 1995 and took command of Veendam as HAL’s first-ever British captain.
Born in Sussex, England, Captain Mercer joined the British Merchant Navy in 1968 as apprentice with the British & Commonwealth Shipping Company. Before qualifying for his master’s license in 1979, he had traveled to numerous countries around the world, serving on general cargo, reefer, bulk carriers, container and passenger ships. Always an eventful industry, he once spent three days in a lifeboat in the South Atlantic after the ship on which he was serving suffered a serious fire — which was fought for 36 hours — and had to be abandoned.
In 1979 he joined a European ferry company plying between the UK and France, and Belgium and Holland in busy shipping lanes. He achieved the rank of captain in 1987.
Captain Mercer still maintains his British links, however he now has a home in Merritt Island, Fla., with his American wife, Karen. He relaxes by playing golf, taking his (small!) boat out on the local rivers and driving his Mini Cooper S, which he calls “his go cart on steroids.”
